529 Plan for Education

What is a 529 Plan?

The name “529 Plan” is based on Section 529 of the Internal Revenue Code. You enjoy significant tax advantages when you save money in a 529 Plan for future education costs. The funds in a 529 Plan are never taxed if they are spent for tuition and other education-related expenses at eligible colleges and universities. They can also be used K through 12 education costs.

Most parents save monthly in their children’s 529 Plans. Grandparents often add to these accounts as a gift on grandchildren’s birthdays.

We can help you establish 529 Plan at Fidelity, Vanguard and American Funds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to some of the most common questions families have about saving for education with a 529 plan.

What is a 529 plan?

A 529 plan is a tax-advantaged account designed to help families save for education. Investments can potentially grow over time, and earnings can generally be withdrawn free of federal income tax when used for qualified education expenses.

What expenses can 529 plan money be used for?

529 funds can generally be used for qualified expenses such as college tuition, fees, books, supplies, computers and certain room-and-board costs. Other education expenses may also qualify depending on current federal and state rules.

Can grandparents contribute to a 529 plan?

Yes. Parents, grandparents and other family members can contribute to a child's 529 plan. For grandparents in particular, a 529 plan can be a meaningful way to help fund a grandchild's education while incorporating education gifts into broader family and legacy planning.

What happens if my child does not use all the money?

You may have several options, including keeping the account for future education, changing the beneficiary to another qualifying family member, or potentially rolling eligible unused funds into a Roth IRA for the beneficiary, subject to applicable rules and limits.

When should I start saving for college?

Starting early can give your investments more time to potentially grow, but it is not necessarily too late if your child is already approaching high school or college. The appropriate strategy depends on your child's age, anticipated education costs and your family's overall financial goals.
